Budapest Christmas Fair

Today I went with my daughter to Budapest Xmas Fair, which is
one of the most popular Christmas fairs in Europe awaits the lovers of winter programmes this year again in the heart of Budapest, in Vörösmarty Square.
More than 100 wooden pavilions, which will attract visitors with their unique high quality folklore and applied arts products, will be built on the square. Christmas decorations, small presents, candles, gloves, woollen hats, wrought iron and woven products are also sold here, as well as other special articles that cannot be found anywhere else. You can experience the real wonders of winter-time while enjoying tproducts that have been evaluated by a jury, and satisfying your appetite at typical Hungarian buffets, which offer mulled wine, kürtoskalács (sweet Hungarian pastry), roast chestnuts and other market snacks. When passing along the colourful and beautifully decorated rows of pavilions, it is worth walking, with mulled wine and kenyérlángos (flat bread baked in a cob oven) in your hands,  to the front of the Gerbeaudcafé, where a great festive atmosphere is guaranteed due to the performances by children, folklore groups, dance houses, brass and reed bands, string orchestras and choirs.

Maeklong railway market

Maeklong railway market ตลาดแม่กลอง

"Maeklong Railway Market, located in Samut Songkhram, Thailand, 1-2 hours drive from Bangkok. It looks like any other open-air market in Asia. There are tropical fruits and vegetables such as lychee, durian, and mango in big brightly colored piles, variety of dried spices, pastes and herbs, freshly caught seafood and other local foods. The crowd weave their way around in between vendors, picking up whatever they need for the day. The market is sheltered by low-hanging awnings/umbrellas and if you look closely, you will notice that you are actually walking on train rails.

Then a piercing siren sounds and in a flash the market transforms - the shoppers disappear and the stallholders whip away their produce. One moment you see the locals shopping for their vegetables and the next moment the vendors will scoop up their baskets and boxes and anything that lies over the track. The market comes to a standstill as all the vendors hold on to the poles supporting their awnings to make way for the train to pass. It is such a tight squeeze that the train travelling at about 15mph almost touches the fruits, vegetables and everything else at the marketplace as it passes through."

Dried Cuttlefish (Cambodia)

Dried Cuttlefish - Psar Thmei, Phnom Penh

Dried Cuttlefish - Psar Thmei, Phnom Penh, originally uploaded by Kirk. Have a look at Kirk's food blog, too!

The Phnom Penh Central Market is housed in a colonial-style building in the heart of the Cambodian capital. Its Khmer name Psar Thmay translates as "new market", although it is more commonly referred in English as Central Market.

Source: www.waymarking.com

The Psar Thmay was built in 1937 during the French colonial period, in Art Deco style, and is painted bright ochre. It consists of four wings dominated by a central dome. Within the four wings and around the compound outside are on sale almost anything you can think of, including electronic equipment, clothing, watches, bags, suitcases, dried and fresh foodstuff, jewellery, clothes from cheap t-shirts to krama (Khmer scarves), pseudo-antique, books including photocopied travel guides and lots of souvenirs.

Midnight Flower Market

Midnight Flower Market

This is Bangkok's Flower Market (not to be confused with the floating market). I went to visit this place at around 2 AM, since this is when the shopkeepers are most active. They start arranging the flowers to get them ready for morning deliveries! A walk down this street will take you to a world of colours, fragrances, textures, designs, and so much more! :)

Central Market in Thimphu (Bhutan)

"The very large, two-story Central Market in Thimphu (Bhutan) bears a strong resemblance to similar markets around the world. What I don't understand is this: if 50 different sellers are selling the identical vegetables at the same prices, how does a buyer decide where to buy his/her vegetables? Do buyers get everything from one place, or do they spread their money around?"

Fish Market in South Korea

10 31 Day 17 16

"I was travelling in South Korea on a day trip with a friend from Seoul to Seoraksan National Park in the northeast of the country. Whilst passing through a village (just south of Sokcho) we spotted a hive of activity down by the harbour and stopped to investigate. It turned out to be a very busy fish market with many stalls and eating places, a photographic treasure trove. My only regret is that I did not try more foods as I was keen to keep my hands free for operating the camera. A lucky chance find, it wasn't especially big, but there was at least one photograph at every turn! Fabulous!"
